More to Love at Süti & Co.

The art of the open-faced sandwich.

One of the great pleasures of food is its connection to memory—and often, to the simple pleasures of childhood. While I may not be able to sit at my grandmother’s kitchen counter, I can track down some exceptional bread, craft a few homemade pickles and assemble a truly beautiful smørrebrød (aka: a Danish open-faced sandwich).

Lovers of avocado toast may think, “Oh, I’ve eaten that!”—but this is, in fact, an entirely different animal. Since their initial popularity in the 1960s, a complex culture has developed around smørrebrød—not unsimilar to the taco culture we see in the Americas. From the selection of toppings, to the order in which certain ingredients are typically eaten, Danes often have strong opinions on how best to prepare and eat these toasts.

What I love most about smørrebrød is the ability to shift with the seasons and celebrate peak produce. The traditional rye and seed bread, as well as the pickled toppings, also make them a healthful option for a snack or lunch—a perfect savory complement to our many sweets at Süti & Co.

TOAST TUESDAYS
Starting Tuesday, January 31st

We’ll be serving up seasonal smørrebrød every Tuesday. Our wonderful friends at Moxie Bread Co. have worked their magic to recreate a traditional Danish rye bread, on which we will serve a range of housemade toppings, including many pickled or cured ingredients.
